Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This portrait was probably slightly smaller than it is today and on all sides there are additions. The top edge has been extended by about an inch and a half, the bottom and the sides by slightly less. These additions were probably made so that the painting would fit a frame.
The canvas is lined with wax and is stretched onto a new stretcher. Although there are retouches in the face, particularly on the right side as we view the work, there appears to be no reason why the painting should not be properly restored. If it were to be returned to its original size, lined with a non-wax adhesive and cleaned and retouched accurately, the results would be very impressive.
