Condition

The painting is yellower in colour and cooler in tone than the catalogue illustration. The canvas has an old relining which has not flattened the paint surface. The dirty paint surface is under a discoloured varnish, there are several small losses for example on the angel's right shoulder upper left, in the feet lower left and lower right. as well as an old small tear in Christ's left shoulder, the brushtrokes and impasto can still be appreciated throughout. To the naked eye it appears that apart from the small losses which can be made out, the painting is in good condition underneath the layer of dirt and has been untouched for many many years. Inspection under ultra violet light does not reveal retouchings other than some possible flecks in the background. Offered in a later painted gold wooden frame that has suffered some knocks.
