Description
- Alexander Adriaenssen
- a still life with red, white and pink roses in a glass vase over a stone ledge with butterflies, a grasshopper and a beetle
- signed lower right: Alex Adraenssen fect
and with remains of a date: 16... - oil on canvas
Exhibited
London, Leonard Koetser, Autumn Exhibition 1966, cat. no. 22.
Condition
The painting is brighter than the catalogue illustration. The canvas has a relining that probably dates from the 1960s. Under a discoloured varnish the signed and dated paint surface is abraded and has become somewhat pressed as a result of the relining. To the naked eye the background appears to have been retouched particularly upper centre and centre right as well as the leaves centre right. The green and brown pigments in the centre have lost their sheen. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the extensive retouching to the background and points to further retouchings in the darker tones of the leaves and in and around the vase, and along the edge of the ledge.
Offered in a wood and plaster frame with some knocks.
