The paintings are warmer in tone than the catalogue illustrations suggest. Both supports consist of two horizontal bevelled panels which are flat and stable. The latter painting in the catalogue has a batten securing the join; the join is visible to the recto of the latter painting but not the former. The paint surfaces are secure and stable and under thick yellow varnishes. A thin craquelure is present throughout the paintings, and in areas appears to the naked eye to have been retouched. The former painting has a series of hairline surface scratches lower left which have been retouched. Discoloured retouchings are scattered in both skies. -Inspection under UV light reveals in the former: older and more recent retouchings in the sky, strengthenings and retouchings in the darker tones of the tree and figures, around the boats, and in the craquelure. - In the latter: retouching along the panel join, strengthenings and retouchings in the darker tones to add defintion, for example in the tree, river, and around the figures, and along some of the craqulure. A new varnish would improve the tonality of the works. Offered in modern wooden frames in good condition.
