Description

  • Anonymous American Photographer
  • ‘DUKE, JOSEPH T. PITT’S DOG’
  • sixth-plate daguerreotype
sixth-plate daguerreotype, modern seal, cased, circa 1850; accompanied by a slip of paper inscribed ‘Duke, Joseph T. Pitt’s Dog’ in pencil

Condition

This wonderfully charming image captures its eager-to-please subject with impressive clarity. While the depth-of-field is shallow, the fur on Duke's chest is rendered in detail, as is his face. Given the difficulties of making a dog sit still for the duration of the exposure, it is unusual to see a canine daguerreotype that presents so much detail. The plate appears to be in near-excellent condition. There is a faint diffuse circular spot of warm-toned tarnish above the subject's head. The original seal is present in the case. The case is currently expertly sealed with white paper tape. The silvered reverse of the plate shows that the daguerreotypist gave the plate a second electroplated application of silver.
