- 'GEORGE BALANCHINE AND MARIA TALLCHIEF, NEW YORK, FEB. 19, 1947'
- Ferrotyped gelatin silver print
numbered in the negative, ferrotyped, signed, initialed, titled, dated, and annotated in ink and stamped on the reverse, framed, 1947, one in an edition of 8 (Passage, p. 36)
Provenance
Acquired from A Gallery for Fine Photography, New Orleans, circa 2000
Condition
This vintage ferrotyped print is in generally excellent condition. As is typical of the ferrotyping process, in high raking light, minor pitting, insignificant surface scratches, and a slight irregularity to the overall glossy surface are visible. The edges of the negative are visible, and '13762P-10' is written in the lower edge of the negative. The upper and lower edges of the print are rippled slightly. In raking light, a small sharp crease that appears to break the emulsion is visible near the upper edge of the image.
On the reverse of the print is the following annotation by the photographer in ink: 'Print made near to date of photographic sitting.' Also on the reverse, the Condé Nast copyright stamp is dated '1948' and 'renewed 1976' in ink. The edition stamp indicates that there are no more than '8' signed silver prints of this image. There is a barely legible copyright/use stamp, stamped 'Feb 24.' The following notations are also written on the reverse of the print: REF. '3434' (in pencil); and 'W' (in ink).
