Description

  • Paul Strand
  • 'LEWIS COLE, PROSPECT HARBOR, MAINE'
  • Gelatin silver print
flush-mounted, signed, titled, and dated in ink and with a Light Gallery stamp, number '77.054' in pencil, on the reverse, framed, 1946, probably printed in the 1950s or 1960s (Time in New England, p. 185)

Condition

As is frequently seen with Paul Strand's photographs, this print has the photographer's extensive printing notations written on the reverse. Because the print is flush-mounted to thick paper, these are only partially visible. The following notations can be made out at various places on the reverse: '1/I Medalist 3' (Kodak Medalist printing paper grade 3); 'F 8. 42' (the aperture setting for the enlarging lens and the exposure time in seconds for the print); '__ shaded' (the print was shaded or dodged in an area); and '__ + 5' (burning in an area for an additional 5 seconds). This photograph, on slightly cool-toned paper with a slight surface sheen, is essentially in excellent condition. There is a broad range of tonality from blacks to true whites. Upon extremely close examination, 2 tiny deposits of original retouching are visible in the lower corners. The margin edges are lightly worn, and there are a few tiny chips primarily along the lower right edge. The reverse of the mount is slightly darkened at its periphery. Written on the reverse in an unidentified hand in pencil is '#311-B.'

Catalogue Note

This image was included in the first and subsequent editions of Time in New England.  For the Time in New England project, Strand focused his camera upon the architecture, the flora, and on the people of New England, ultimately creating a pictorial document of the region that had no corollary.  Of his portraits, he wrote, ‘It is one thing to photograph people.  It is another to make others care about them by revealing the core of their humanness.’

According to Strand authority Anthony Montoya, it is believed that the print offered here is one of 4 extant prints of the image.  Aside from the present print, there are two prints in The Philadelphia Museum of Art, a similar enlargement and a contact print, and an early contact print in a private collection.
