Description

  • Paul Strand
  • 'LANDSCAPE, SICILY'
  • Gelatin silver print
flush-mounted, signed, titled, and dated in ink and with 'Master' in pencil on the reverse, matted, a Galerie Zur Stockeregg, Zurich, label on the reverse, 1954, probably printed in the 1960s or early 1970s (Zur Stockeregg, Katalog 5, pl. 81, this print)

Condition

As is frequently seen with Paul Strand's photographs, this print has the photographer's extensive printing notations written on the reverse. Because the print is flush-mounted to thick paper, these are only partially visible. The following notations can be made out at various places on the reverse: '3 Ektalure E;' 'F11 - 51;' 'shadow parts shaded;' 'left side +6;' and 'Amidol.' This somewhat cool-toned photograph is on Kodak Ektalure photographic paper, one of Strand's preferred papers in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It is on lightly textured paper with a very fine surface sheen. The print is in generally excellent condition. It has slender margins that are very lightly darkened. A thin border of dry-mounting tissue is visible along the lower and right edges. On the reverse of the print, there is a thin typed label: 'Copyright 1982 Paul Strand Archive, Aperture Foundation, Inc.' Also on the reverse are the following notations in various unidentified hands in pencil: '#559,' 'IT-LAND-1358,' 'PHS,' and 'Master.'

Catalogue Note

According to Strand authority Anthony Montoya, it is believed that the print offered here is one of 6 extant prints of the image, all but one enlargements from the 5-by-7-inch negative.  Aside from the present print, there is one at the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, Tucson; one in the collection of The Philadelphia Museum of Art; and at least 2 in private collections.
