Condition
This early print, which is on paper with a slightly pebbled surface, is in generally excellent condition. It has 1/8-inch margins and has been flush-mounted to a piece of photographic paper. A tiny strip of dry-mounting tissue is visible at the top edge. The photographer has titled, dated and annotated the print 'Photograph by Paul Strand' on the reverse, and there are also matting notations and the number '565' in pencil. When examined in raking light, several tiny deposits, possible original retouching, are visible.
This print does not appear to fluoresce when examined with ultraviolet light.
There are 4 remnants of cellulose tape in the corners on the reverse.

Catalogue Note
According to Strand authority Anthony Montoya, Strand made this photograph with his 4-by-5-inch Graflex camera, which he used in 1929 and 1930. It is believed that the print offered here is one of 6 extant prints of the image. Strand made only one early contact print, now in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The print offered here, and the other 4 prints, are slight enlargements likely made in the 1950s or 1960s. Three are located in the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D. C.; and the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson. Two prints were acquired from the photographer’s estate by Light Gallery in 1978 and by Weston Gallery in the early 1980s, one of which may be the print offered here.
