Catalogue Note

Luxuriously decorated porcelain washing sets comprising a pitcher, deep bowl, and a soap dish can be found frequently in the inventories of the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory's production throughout the 19th century. Together with porcelain services and vases, they were presented to all members of the Imperial family at Christmas and Easter. Similar pitchers from washing sets belonging to Emperor Nicholas I and Grand Duchess Alexandra Nikolaevna are reproduced in Imperatorskii farforovyi zavod, 1744-1904, St. Petersburg, 2008, pp. 454 and 457. The fine flower painting on this pitcher is almost certainly the work of factory painter Konstantin Krasovskii (1834-1906), a member of talented family of porcelain painters who designed and painted some of the most beautiful and technically complex flower paintings produced at the factory in the 19th century. See N.S. Petrova, "Dinastiia khudozhnikov Krasovskikh na Imperatorskom faroforovom zavode," Antikvarnoe obozrenie February 2009, pp. 70-74. We are grateful to Natalia S. Petrova for assistance in cataloging this lot.
