Catalogue Note
The sculptor Feliks Khodorovich (Chodorowicz), a Pole born in present-day Belarus, served in the Imperial Russian army in Tbilisi (formerly Tiflis). Here he became enamored of the Southern capital, remaining in the city for the remainder of his life, receiving numerous important commissions for public sculpture. In 1886, a St. Petersburg journal noted that Khodorovich was preparing a group of genre figures depicting the peoples of the Caucasus and this view of a distinctive bullock cart and its driver (Arbakesh) is probably from that series. On this design, see Gosudarstvennaia Tretiakovskaia galereia, katalog sobraniia: Skulptura XVIII-XIX vekov, Moscow, 2000, no. 388, p. 266.
