of rounded tapering form, molded with acanthus leaves in matt gilt against a rich chocolate brown ground, the upper rim with brightly colored ornament neo-Gothic ornament against a gilded ground, the tapering rim with a row of pink and green bands

The popularity of the Neo-Gothic style in Russia found nearly perfect expression in the designs of the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory during the reign of Nicholas I, when new glazes and tints provided artists with an unprecedented range of intense colors to render designs inspired by medieval stained glass windows. We are grateful to Natalia Petrova for assistance in cataloging this lot.
