Catalogue Note

August Karlovich Timus (1865-after 1917) directed the sculpture workshop at the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory from 1894-1914 during which time he designed a large number of vases.  He also created models for several objects executed by Fabergé for the Imperial court, including the silver service for the dowry of Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna.  The partial name 'A. Lu' incised inside the neck is most certainly the signature of factory modeller Anatolii Lukin, who often created the models of designs by Timus, August Spiess and others.  For vase designs by Timus, see T.N. Nosovich and I.P. Popova, Gosudarstvennyi farforovyi zavod, 1904-1944, St Petersburg, 2005, pp. 37, 115-119.
