the base repoussé with the Imperial eagle, the flat cartouche-form handle engraved with Empress Catherine II's cipher beneath the Imperial crown within chased scrolls, the prow with an engraved profile portrait of the Empress, the sides engraved with a series of cartouches framing Russian inscriptions recording the Empress' presentation of the kovsh on 18 March 1773 to Cossack Hetman Grigory Melnikov for his faithful service, struck with mark of assay master Ivan Savelev and Moscow city mark, the underside numbered 59 and engraved with the weight of 1 funt, 20 zolotniki

Condition

the prow apparently having lost the imperial eagle or some other earlier finial, the surface with some losses and discoloration consistent with age, particularly on the underside and interior
