A rare and unusual two-coloured wood and bone carving of the Mother of God of the Sign, possibly Moscow or Novgorod, 16th century

Description

  • 11.7 by 8.4cm, 4 5/8 by 3 1/2 in.
centred by a medallion with the Mother of God of the Sign, her hands raised in prayer, with a circular inscription in Church Slavonic, and with four prophets depicted in the corners, in the upper register St John the Forerunner in the centre flanked by four prophets, in the lower register St Petr of Moscow, St Sergei of Radonezh and St Catherine, two saints missing, an inscription in Greek running on both sides of the panel, the reverse applied with a wax seal of the arms of Prince Scherbatov and Countess Stroganov

Condition

In the centre of the upper border a small piece of wood replaced, with some small loss top left corner, the lower border in all probability replaced, two saints damaged from the lower row, a fine crack running through the centre in the lower part of the medallion, some fine cracks in the wood visible on the reverse

This highly unusual object can be compared with a very similar miniature plaque, centred with the Trinity, and in all probability from the same workshop, that was sold, Sotheby’s London, 17 October 1986, lot 109.
