Catalogue Note
The Danish painter, sculptor and art collector Laurits Tuxen (1853-1927) was active at the Imperial Russian Court. His famous paintings of weddings, coronations and balls at the Court of Emperor Nicholas II, demonstrate the grandeur and splendour of the Russian Empire in the late 19th-early 20th centuries.
The Byzantine iconography of the Deesis was one of the most popular in Cretan icon painting. The composition of the icon as well as the size of the panel is 🧜🅺very similar to the signed Deesis icon by Angelos Akotantos from the first half of the 15th century, particularly in the relatively large size of Christ's head and the depiction of His hair. The style of the offered lot, however, suggests a somewhat later date of circa 1600. The reproduction of this Angelos type of the Deesis icon attests the existence of a common working drawing.
