painted in a lively style and in warm colours, the panel with a double raised border, centred with the Fiery Ascension of the Prophet Elijah, surrounded by fourteen scenes from his life based on the First and Second Book of Kings from the Old Testament: the prophesy of the birth of Elijah; the birth of Elijah with angels wrapping him up and feeding him divine fire; Elijah speaking to God in the desert; Elijah coming to King Ahab; Elijah going to Zarepath where a widow is busy gathering sticks; Elijah asking the widow to bring him a morsel of bread; Elijah in the house of the widow and her dead son; Elijah bringing the dead child back to life; Elijah giving the living child back to his mother; Elijah speaking to the prophets of Baal in the desert; the prophets calling in vain upon their god to kindle wood; Elijah calling upon his God Yahweh and the wood bursting into flames; Elijah killing the prophets of Baal; Elijah finding Elisha ploughing

Condition
The central scene of the icon consisting of a single piece of wood, put seperately into the panel, below and above this recessed central area a vertical crack, the lower border in the centre filled with a patch of new levkas, some small patches of new levkas applied along the edges of the panel, some minor wear to the painting and some minor retouching
