Catalogue Note

Samson was granted supernatural strength by God in order to combat his enemies and perform heroic feats. The representation of Samson and the Lion is a very rare subject in Russian icon painting. This icon is a relatively early example and derives in all probability from the local row of an iconostasis in the Russian North.
