Condition

The work is in good condition overall, as is the canvas. Close observation reveals that there are indications of stable craquelures scattered throughout the painting surface which is consistent with the painting's age and a minute paint loss on the branch (top right), but the paint layers are sound and stable. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals some scattered retouching in general, particularly on the lower right, which are not apparent to the naked eye. The colour of the catalogue is nearly accurate, however the painting is warmer in reality. Framed.

Catalogue Note

"The years 1920 to 1945 stand out as Amorsolo's Golden Period. After Amorsolo, genre was never the same again. One critic cited Amorsolo's use of 'colour, triumphant over realism' as the undoing of Philippines genre. But Amorsolo's influence on art and the public perception of art cannot be underestimated. He invested rural people with dignity, and country life with a feeling of contentment. His works captured the optimistic spirit and grace of peacetime Philippines, before the Pacific War of 1941 – a time of innocence for the Philippines."
