Catalogue Note
Boldini on the art of hanging exhibitions. This fine collection of letters and sketches to the Secrétaire Générale of the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts, spanning twenty years, concerns Boldini's ideas on how his painting should be hung in various Paris Salons. In one detailed pencil sketch for the Salon of 1911, inscribed "Boldini Salle 13" in red ink, the artist sketches out his arrangement of a wall to be hung with four female portraits and a still life. From the left, he begins with "Mlle M. de H" (as per Boldini's note, Dini & Dini 1046, "Signora con Stola di Pelliccia Scura", possibly a portrait of Miss Julia Helena Martinez de Hoy, whom he also painted in 1914 as well); second is "Mme FST" (recorded as an anonymous sitter by Dini & Dini 1032 [see fig. 1]); pride-of-place in the center is given to "Mme G. V." (Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt; Mme. G[uilliaume] Vanderbilt, Dini & Dini 993 [see fig. 2]; next is "Princesse B" (Princesse Marthe-Lucille Bibesco, Dini & Dini 1026); the still life on the end is unidentified.
The drawing of a mother and two children on another sheet appears to be a sketch of the painting Portrait of Mrs. Harjes and Her Two Sons (Dini & Dini 1094).
