Catalogue Note

For her Dirty Windows series, Merry Alpern surreptitiously captured the activities in the bathroom of an after-hours sex club from the back-alley window of a friend’s apartment near Wall Street.  Because of the sexual content and drug use depicted in these images, as well as concerns regarding privacy issues, her National Endowment for the Arts grant was rescinded in 1994.
