Catalogue Note
With an Extract from the Archives confirming the date of manufacture in 1973 and subsequent sale on December 15th of that year. Further accompanied by product literature, a Patek Philippe presentation box and outer packaging.
In his letter dated January 21st, 1988, to Patek Philippe, Mr. Fullerton contemplated the future direction of his collection. He ends his note with:
"I do hope you will look for a few items for me... the perpetual calendars which fall between my 2497 and 3940. I believe they are 3448 and 3450."
Here we see the deliberate and calculated efforts of the consummate collector to fill in gaps in his curated group. Each piece was chosen with precision and foresight into creating a timeline that would come to represent the seminal Patek Philippe wristwatches known to collectors today. And just as Mr. Fullerton set out to do, within the next two years he did indeed find for his collection the perpetual calendars that would complete the gap between his superlative 2497 and what was at the time a contemporary piece, the 3940. The present lot represents the first of those finds. For the second, Ref. 3450, see the following lot.
This model, Ref. 3448, was launched in 1962. At that time, it was the only automatic perpetual calendar wristwatch on the market and remained in production until the early 1980s.The model was ultimately succeeded by Ref. 3450, produced from 1981 to 1985, which included the leap year indication and some more subtle differences.
It is interesting to note the relatively small quantity of watches made in this reference. Only 586 pieces were made in total over the 20 year production period, meaning roughly 30 examples were made each year. As such, Patek Philippe's technicians were able to pay the utmost attention to each piece.
