Catalogue Note

Sir Ronald Storrs earned his Classical degree at Cambridge. He advanced quickly from a junior post with the British Ministry of Finance in Egypt to Oriental Secretary to the British Agency in the Middle East. During this time he met T.E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, who called Storrs, "the most brilliant Englishman in the Near East, and subtly efficient, despite his diversion of energy in love of music and letters, of sculpture, painting, of whatever was beautiful in the world's fruit...." (The Seven Pillars of Wisdom). They remained close friends, and Storrs was a pallbearer at Lawrence's funeral in 1935. Storrs' other posts included member of the Arab Bureau during WWI, Governor of Jerusalem (1917), Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Cyprus (1926-1932), Governor of Northern Rhodesia (1932), and member of the London City Council (1937-1945).
