Description

  • A Marble Head of the Capitoline Aphrodite, Roman Imperial

  • Height of head 9 in. 22.9 cm.; total height with 18th/19th Century shoulders and socle 17 in. 43.2 cm.
turned to her left and gazing down, with parted lips and nose restored in marble, her hair swept back from the temples, arranged in a top-knot and chignon, and bound in a diadem, two locks escaping in front of the ears; mounted on an 18th/19th Century marble bust and socle.

Condition

The head in good condition, about one-third of the nose restored in marble, surface of 18/19th century shoulders somewhat pitted, minor chips in hair, large chip on one side of the chignon. Both the shoulders and the head have been dramatically cleaned since the printed catalogue was published. Please refer to the new updated online photographs.
