Catalogue Note

"More than anything else, the "black surface" highlights how the colour of shadow may be used to redefine the painting not as territory of the artist's gesture but as a complementary projection antithetical to the body [.]  Castellani's use of a pure, monochrome black containing no forms or configurations for our contemplation aspires to a reduction to absolute zero which recalls Kasimir Malevich's black square...".
