Description

  • Louis Comfort Tiffany
  • gold, demantoid garnet, enamel
The oval-shaped demantoid garnet weighing approximately 3.50 carats within a mounting decorated with scrollwork motifs, the underside highlighted with green plique-à-jour enamel, size 4, signed Louis C. Tiffany; circa 1905.

Condition

The mounting in good overall condition with nicking and scratching to the gold commensurate with age. The demantoid is a lively medium yellowish green, more yellowish green than illustrated in the printed catalogue. Moderate abrading to the facet junctions and scratching to the facet planes as typically found with this type of material, but apparent only under close inspection. The interior of the stone is lightly included. The shoulders are composed of two tiers with enamelwork applied exclusively to the lower section and remaining in good condition. The shank interior piece bears a facsimile of Louis Comfort Tiffany's handwritten signature, suggesting the piece was made between 1902-1907 and under the directorship of Julia Munson. As described by Janet Zapata in her book "The Jewelry and Enamels of Louis Comfort Tiffany," fewer than 400 jewels were made during this period and all were signed "Louis C. Tiffany" followed by "Artist." On a limited number of pieces, the "artist" was omitted, as seems to be the case here, possibly due to the limited space allowed by the mounting. These pieces were also given scratch numbers preceded by the initial J for Julia Munson. Although the surface wear on the present piece makes it difficult to read the scratch marks with certainty, the first character resembles a "J." Rings designed under the aegis of Louis C. Tiffany are exceedingly rare, making this a truly special piece. For more information, see "The Jewelry and Enamels of Louis Comfort Tiffany," Janet Zapata, page 75. For an illustration of Louis Comfort Tiffany's signature, see page 82, figures 34 and 35.
