Condition
Work is in very good condition. The sheet is hinged to a mount along the top edge of the verso. Colors are extremely fresh and vibrant, though the exposed sheet is a little time-darkeneed and mat-stained around the extreme perimeter, and there are additional stains within the mat stain along the top edge caused by moisture. On the verso the outline of the horse bleeds through as does the mat stain. Otherwise fine.

Catalogue Note
In keeping with his still lifes and figure paintings, Renoir's outdoor scenes were frequently small in size and rapidly executed. In this particular work, Renoir uses thick impasto and energetic brushstrokes to instill in the work a vibrant, vivacious quality. Like sketches completed en plein air, Renoir’s impression of this fertile rural scene suggests a fleeting moment, skillfully captured, while the vivid palate and the careful modeling of the horse’s flank reveal the work to be far more than a simple sketch.
Renoir was undoubtedly influenced by a long line of French artists, many quite academic, and although the majority of his works were conceived en plein air in the manner of the Impressionists, there are clear ties between his work and the more deeply considered art of the Old Masters. While the present work perfectly captures Renoir's avant-garde edge, it likewise remains consistent in depicting him as "a faithful priest of the art which is immortal because it is the earthly reflection of eternal, divine beauty" (Nicholas Wadley, Renoir: A Retrospective, New York, 1987, p. 277).
