Catalogue Note

Conceived in 1929, Grand cerf is one of Pompon’s most complex designs. Though he preferred and elevated simplicity in his art, breaking down his subjects to their essential characteristics, the figure of the stag represents a challenge of form. The thin legs and elegantly curving horns of the creature divide the composition into complex shapes. Nevertheless, he manages to achieve an exceptional elegance in this bronze; at just under two feet tall, the subtly reducted form asserts itself as characteristically "Pompon" in the graceful symmetry of its composition.
