Condition

In very good condition. The canvas is unlined. The surface is clean and retains a rich impasto. Under U.V, some scattered, very small specks of inpaint can be seen around the extreme edge, in the background and in the left hand bloom of the bouquet on the right. There is a small spot of restoration below and left of the vase on the right. These repairs are minor, only visible under UV, and the work can be hung as is.

Catalogue Note

Auguste Herbin's still lifes of 1905 testify to his unsurpassed talent as a colorist. Indeed, considering the sheer vibrancy of his palette at this time it comes at no surprise that Herbin evolved to become one of the leading proponents of Fauvism. Geneviève Claisse, in her catalogue raisonné on the artist, highlights the artist's authenticity and originality: "...[the] bearer of an ethical tradition of work and social duty, Herbin approached each painting as a new creation in its own right. There was no self-indulgence permitted, no deliberate repetition, no nod to critics, patrons, institutions nor, of course the market" (Geneviève Claisse, op. cit., n.p.).
