Condition

This work of fairly significant scale has been recently restored and should be hung in its current condition. The canvas has a light lining which is nicely supporting the paint layer, without denying the work any texture. The paint layer is stable and Matta’s complex brushstrokes and technique are well preserved, even though there are a few retouches. Some of these retouches are visible under ultraviolet light in the pale area in the upper center, where a vertical paint loss has been retouched. Along the bottom edge, particularly in the center and lower right there are also a few retouches. In the center of the right side there is a dark area which has been retouched. This retouching measures about 2 x 2 inches. There are a few other small spots of restoration – a group in the center of the work, running vertically through the yellow horizontal area and into the green below it. Overall, the condition is good and the work should be hung as is. (This condition report has been provided courtesy of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.)
