Condition
The catolgue illustration is too blue in tone. All four canvas' have old relinings, they have not been recently cleaned and their varnish has dulled slightly. The paint surface of each canvas appears to be in very good condition indeed with no significant areas of wear except perhaps to the face of Africa and her standing attendents. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals no significant damage or repairs except to the standing foot of Africa's attendent. All other interventions are restricted purley to scattered local retouchings.
These lots are offered in later giltwood frames in good condition with some minor chips.

Catalogue Note
This set of canvases relates to Solimena's bozzetti for the now-lost frescoes from 1738 on the ceiling of the Gabinetto in the Palazzo Reale in Naples which are recorded by Bernardo De Dominici.1 The bozzetti are in the Galleria Doria Pamphilij in Rome.2 The present works are painted in a homogenous style, suggesting that they could be ascribed to an individual hand, possibly that of Nicola Maria Rossi, who entered Solimena's studio in 1706.
