Condition
The painting has a more consistent overall tone (white highlights are less intense) than the catalogue illustration would suggest. It consists of four horizontal panels of equal size which have been cradled but not bevelled. There are some old inlaid supports, particularly along the join between panels 1 (numbered top to bottom) and 2. Some very minor splits run horizontally along panels 1, 3 and 4 but otherwise the panel is flat and stable and there appear to be no dramatic problems.
The paint surface is stable and in very good condition with the impasto still beautifully intact in the fruit and bird feathers. There are some repairs and refilling at certain points along the centre join and along the join between panels 3 and 4. Small restorations are scattered throughout the background.
Inspection under Ultraviolet light confirms the above and reveal some further small areas of repainting: to the leaf in the upper right corner, on the wall above the basket, and to the inner side of the bowl.
The painting is offered in a part-gilded and painted cassetta frame, in good condition.

Catalogue Note
Though Greindl published this as an autograph work by Snyders, Robels considered it a workshop variant of the painting sold Berlin, Lepke, 31 October 1905, lot 52 which is also on panel, slightly wider but not as tall. The grapes recur in the same arrangement in the larger painting on canvas now in the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh (inv. no. 52.9.201; see Robels, under Literature, pp. 270-71, no. 143, reproduced).
