Condition

The painting is softer in colour and not as sharp in terms of definition as the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canvas has an old wax lining. The paint surface appears to be in good overall condition with no apparent damag or loss of paint except for old frame abrasion lower right. There is dirt and varnish overall. Examination under ultraviolet reveals recent very minor flecks of cosmetic scattered retouching which includes strengthening to the figural group. There is also very minor retouching to an old horizontal area of damage to the side of the tablecloth measuring approx. 1 in. There is a very thick discoloured barnish which impedes further inspection. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame in good overall condition.
