By whom sold to the father of the present owner, 1958 (as "Bay Malton in a Landscape").

Literature

J. Egerton, George Stubbs, Painter. Catalogue Raisonné, New Haven and London 2007, pp. 288-289, cat. no. 108, reproduced in colour (as by Stubbs).

Condition

The colours are lighter and the tone softer than the catalogue illustration would suggest. The canas has been lined and the paint surface appears to be in good overall condition with no apparent damage or loss of paint except for some localised areas of craquelure which have resulted in some very minor losses in the darker pigments of the ground as can be seen in the catalogue illustration. The paint is a little thin in places as a result of the relining and there is adiscoloured varnish overall but otherwise it appears to be in good ready to hang condition. Examination under ultrviolet confirms the presence of the mottled varnish and reveasl several campaigns of cosmetic retouching, which includes sctatered flecks of retouching in the sky, the foliage and to the canvas edges. There is also more recent retouching to the aforementioned localised spots of craquelure and there is retouching to the horses mane and and strengthening to it's form. finally there is very minor retocuing to an old surface scratch measuring approx. 4 in in the water below the horses undercarriage which is invisible to the naked eye. Offered in a gilt wood and plaster frame with minor losses.
