Catalogue Note
Another drawing by the artist of this subject was sold, London, Sotheby's, 5 July 2006, lot 36. Neither study seems to be related to a known painting, but both are totally characteristic of Mola's style in the use of pen and wash, and in the amusing treatment of the subject. Both also bear the same 17th-century attribution to Mola, which is also found on other drawings by the artist.
Several other drawings by or attributed to Mola were given to the Princeton Art Museum by Mather, who was the director of the Museum for many years.1
