Catalogue Note
This anonymous Venetian master takes his name from a series of twenty panels depicting Biblical scenes, formerly in the church of Saint-Nicholas-des-Champs, Paris. This and the following lot can be closely compared to the artist's Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane and Christ Mocked in the Chateau de Bourdeilles, Dordogne and appear to belong to a parallel series.1 The halos, formed with the same round and six point star punch work, are identical in each of the works and the rock formation here below the Archangel Gabriel is strikingly similar to that depicted in Gethsemane.
We are grateful to Andrea de Marchi for suggesting an attribution of this painting to the Master of Saint-Nicholas-des-Champs on the basis of photographs.
