Description

  • Sinibaldo Ibi
  • The Marriage of the Virgin
  • oil on panel

Condition

The panel appears to be made up of one board which is flat and stable and cradled on the reverse. Overall the painting is in good condition, the color and details appear well retained with very minor losses to the paint surface as expected for a painting of this age. Inspection under UV reveals different courses of restoration, with possible older retouching in the background and more recent minor retouches to the window beyond and in the draperies which have been sensitively applied. The painting is ready to hang in its current state and is offered in a simple carved gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note

This Marriage of the Virgin follows the composition of Perugino’s 1497 predella for the altarpiece in the church of Santa Maria Nuova, Fano, replacing the background with a simpler architectural construct framed by two columns. We are grateful to Filippo Todini for noting a similarity in the accentuated drawing of contours and somewhat💟 rigid poses of the figures here to those in works by Sinibaldo Ibi.  A pupil of Perugino, Sinibaldo closely followed his master while working in his studio and his painting also bear the influence of Raphael and Pintuཧricchio.
