These two devotional panels which were likely destined for domestic use were painted by Domenico di Zanobi, until recently known as the Master of the Johnson Nativity. In 1966, Everett Fahy named this follower of Domenico Ghirlandajo after a painting in the Johnson Collection in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, later extending his catalogue of paintings to twenty-eight works.¹ It was not until 1990 that Annamaria Bernacchioni could securely identify the master as Domenico di Zanobi.² Domenico was associated with the studio of Fra Filippo Lippi but also seems to have come under the influence of Alesso Baldovinetti, Sandro Botticelli and Andrea Castagno.
