Description
- Head of God the Father, a crown below, a fragment
oil on panel, gold ground, unframed
Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This painting seems to be well restored. The reverse has a diagonal cradle, which appears to be effective. The frame has also been attended to. The gilding in the halo may have been slightly repaired in a few places, as well as in the crown in the lower center, which does seem more original. The upper right and upper left have been heavily restored, and may not be original. The face shows very little retouching of any note. There are a few retouches in the beard below the mouth and a small handful of tiny spots in the forehead. I like the condition, and the work should be hung as is.

Catalogue Note
This fragment of the figure of God the Father was probably cut from a tondo as the grain of the wood runs diagonally to the painted surface. The partial crown at bottom would most likely have adorned a figure of the Virgin. The cruciform halo, here seen on God the Father, is usually associated wi𒉰th the depiction of Christ and was probably a later addition.
