Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This painting is quite dirty and dull; it certainly requires restoration. It is painted on an
unreinforced oak panel that is very slightly curved from left to right. The paint layer is stable, and the panel contributes to the health of the painting. This is a fairly quickly painted picture, and although there is a brushy thinness to the headdress and pink blouse, there is a good argument that a lot of this is intentional. The face is similarly freely painted and not damaged. If the painting were cleaned, the palette would brighten considerably. Although a few restorations would be removed in this process, the benefits would be immediately visible. Some well applied delicate retouches would certainly bring the picture together very effectively.
