Description

  • Costantino Cedini
  • Aurora with Apollo driving the Sun Chariot
  • oil on canvas
  • 18 1/4 x 38 inches

Condition

The canvas has an old relining in good condition and the paint layer is nicely retained. As the background is thinly painted, a little of the red ground shows through, though this in no way detracts from the image. Inspection under UV is impeded by a milky varnish and the painting would benefit from a light clean and varnish to freshen the clouds and flesh tones, though very little extra work would appear to be necessary. The painting is offered in a carved gilt wood frame.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

An attribution to the painter Costantino Cedini (1741-1811) has been suggested by Prof. Lino Moretti, on the basis of photographs. Cedini was born in Padua but is recorded in Venice from 1768. He is thought to have trained under Jacopo Guarana; himself a prolific painter on a large scale, specialising in frescoes.  This work is likely to have been a bozzetto or a modello for Cedini's ceiling in Palazzo Jägher (now Jacopo Sansovino School) in calle del Remèr, Venice.
