Catalogue Note

This swirling bust length depiction of this Penitent Magdalene calls to mind certain Venetian artists working in the first half of the eighteenth century, particularly the young Giambattista Tiepolo, who's early works executed in Udine do bear similarities with the present picture. Specifically, the slightly exaggerated oval face of the Magdalene does recall early bust length depictions of the Madonna (see M. Gemin and F. Pedrocco, Giambattista Tiepolo: I dipinti, Venice 1993, cat. nos. 36-9). The subject's reddish hair, intense upwards gaze, and pile of manuscripts clearly identify her as Mary Magdalene.
