Description

  • Cats being instructed in the art of mouse-catching by an owl
  • oil on canvas, within a painted lunette

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 9 July 1998, lot 354;
There purchased by the present owner.

Condition

The canvas has been relined. There is a thin scratch in the varnish to the right of the central book which can be easily repaired. There are small scattered retouches in selective areas of the composition, mostly in parts of the fur of a few cats, around the outside of the winged figure and in the background. These are applied economically though and do not stand out to the naked eye. They are applied mostly in the darks of the figures and thus blend in. In a carved gilt wood frame.
