The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting has been lined with wax. The restoration is quite amateurish and is focused on a teardrop shaped loss about four inches long, which is in the side of the light colored building on the far side of the center of the canal into the gondola in the canal. Otherwise, the only restorations of any note are in the sky on the left, where there are a couple of retouches. Given that the lining and restoration are very heavy handed, it seems that this is a picture that will actually be seen to be in respectable condition when cleaned and restored properly.
