- Verona marble
- 33 5/8 by 50 1/2 by 17 1/2 in.; 85.3 by 128.3 by 44.5cm., with later black, veined marble-veneered wood bases
each with the number 1424 painted on hind quarters.
Condition
Wear/weathering throughout. Surface abrasions. Chipping and small losses, comensurate with age and use. Losses particularly around bases. Each painted with the number 1424 on hindquarters. Each lion weighs 1422 lbs. The lions are sold with a pair of modern marble veneered wood bases. Bases with some losses and detached veneer.

In the Romanesque period in Italy, pairs of recumbant lions were frequently used in churches to support portals, pulpits, choirscreens and baptismal fonts. Columns would rest on the lion's backs which would in turn support the doorway, roof or vessel. Compare two Romanesque red marble stylobate lions in the Detroit Institute of Arts in A.P. Darr, Catalogue of Italian Sculpture, vol. I, London/Turnhout, 2002, nos. 10 and 11a&b, pp. 39-41.
