Catalogue Note
The present relief corresponds with Cheetham's type D for Crucifixion compositions, characterized by a large number of figures flanking the crucified Christ. This relief was probably the center panel of a Passion altarpiece, which would have been surrounded by smaller reliefs illustrating the Betrayal, the Flagellation, the Entombment, and the Resurrection. For a panel of the same type and subject with a very similar composition, see Cheetham, op. cit., p. 253, no. 180.
