Catalogue Note

This composition is after an engraving by Bernard Salomon from his series of Biblical illustrations for the Biblia Sacra. Salomon executed a set of 198 woodcuts illustrating the Old and New Testaments, first published in 1553. He is best known for this series as well as another illustrating Ovid's Metamorphoses. His fine and minutely detailed engravings earned him the nickname "la petit Bernard".

Pierre Reymond (1513-1584) was an important enamelist who primarily produced tazze, covered cups, salt cellars, plates, dishes, and ewers en grisaille. His compositions draw particular inspriation from the work of 16th century engravers Lucas van Leyden, Albrecht Dürer, Marcantonio Raimondi, and, later in life, 🌸Salomon's Biblical engravings.
