Catalogue Note

The  charger is painted with the climax of the battle between the Israelites and the Amalekites as Joshua runs Amalek through with his spear. Here, Moses sits on a rock on Mount Sinai in the upper right of the dish, resting, as his brother, Aaron, and Hur help him to hold up his arms as his strength wanes, ensuring the Israelites' victory. The reverse is centered by Moses holding his staff, the summoning water from a rock and receiving the Ten Commandments.

The battle scene is nearly identical to the engraving of the Battle Under the Walls of Troy by Jean Mignon, a print of which was purchased by the British Museum from Sotheby's on May 13th, 1850. The composition of the present piece also bears a strong resemblance to an enamel plaque in the collection of the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (op. cit., no. 72) by the Master KIP, in turn copied from an engraving by Marco Dente or Agostino Veneziano representing the Triumph of Scipio. A tazza by Jean de Court painted with a very similar scene of the Battle of the Israelites Against the Amalekites is also in the Walters Art Museum collection (op. cit., no. 174).
