Catalogue Note
Della Valle produced a portrait medal of the Prince dated 1723, the year of his accession to the throne (see The Twighlight of the Medici (exh. cat.), Detroit and Florence, 1974, no. 101, pp. 148 and 149). The present portrait shows a man considerably younger than that depicted in the medal, although the arrangement of the hair and drapery as well as the details of the armour are identical.
According to T. Renesse in Dictionnaire des Figures Héraldiques, Brussels, 1892-1903, there is only on💞e family "bearing 3 mallets and a chief indented" (as seen on the center of the top of the giltwood frame). While there are no colors to confirm the family represented, the arms may be those of those of de la Court Van der Vo𒊎ort, of Leyde, in the Low Countries.
