Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The condition of this work is different from the other similar work I examined. The lining is more recent. The cracking to the paint layer is more noticeable, and although there seems to be no sign of abrasion in the foreground, the condition is less good in the profiles of the trees and in the sky. The paint layer is stable. The painting is slightly dirty, but does not necessarily suggest that it should be cleaned. The palette would brighten if the painting was cleaned, but restorations would be removed and would require re-examination.
Retouching in the sky is visible under ultraviolet light in fairly significant losses in the lower left sky, in the center left sky and in other areas in the sky and trees, particularly on the left. The foreground is in better condition. This painting can be hung as is, but the retouching could be adjusted.
